The visit of Dr. Cristóbal Montoro, marked the Start of operations of Veritas Institute. This lecture series Aug. 1-3, was the first event of Veritas, as well as Dr. Montoro becomes the guest of the inaugural International Speakers Program. The event was made possible by the collaboration of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in Washington, USA.

Buenos Aires A new index released today compares the institutional quality of countries worldwide and concludes that the economies where individual rights are stronger and better respect for civil liberties enjoyed higher growth rates and better living standards.

In general, Chile has the best institutions in Latin America, followed by Uruguay and then Costa Rica. Weaker institutions are in Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti, where the inhabitants of these countries have fewer freedoms.

In addition, the Institutional Quality Index, created by Dr. Martin Krause of the University of Economics and Business Administration (ESEADE) in Buenos Aires, provides valuable recommendations on what countries need to do to improve living conditions of its citizens.

Similarly, Institutional Quality Index makes it easier for governments rigorous analysis of what policies can be implemented, and what regulations can be eliminated, in order to improve the functioning of markets for the poorest.

Martin Krause points out that “Latin America was once so rich as today’s developed countries, but due to bad governments and corrupt institutions has been very behind. Institutional Quality Index is an attempt to illustrate exactly where our countries have lagged behind, despite our wealth in natural resources. More importantly, the Index uses a wealth of research to explain how to facilitate high rates of growth and generate significant employment options for the poor.”

The report is being published in 16 countries in Latin America by 18 independent organizations, non-partisan, seeking to improve conditions in their countries and throughout the region.

Guillermo Pena, director of the Institute of Political Economy (formerly Veritas Institute) says that “one of the great tragedies of the twentieth century was that corruption and ineptitude of the public sector were scarce amid an abundance of natural wealth in Latin America . Many studies are published every year telling us how to generate greater economic growth. This new index gives us a useful overview of how to transform our countries in these case studies in which everyone speaks. Provides practical advice on how the region can avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.”
